Last thoughts before leaving.

Not long now. Kevin and I will be off tomorrow morning and we are both looking forward to getting away. St Abbs looks like being a pleasant place to stay, all we need is some pleasant weather to go with it, not that I need sunshine and over twenty degrees. It would be nice not to have to drag an umbrella round everywhere, that's all. One mor job this morning, this Partnair film project which I am doing a bit of stuff on. The script was already translated but has required some major work to make it readable and to make it more than holiday English. I notice with these things that translators don't have the vocabulary which makes a script take on new life. Creating instead of making opportunities is one apt example.
The Zimbabwe story is going from bad to worse with Tsvangirai, who Sky News call Changirai being holed up (AmE) in the Dutch Embassy and the UN saying all the right things but doing nothing. The up and coming president in South Africa seems to be getting it right though. Mr Zuma may be a bit of a gangster, but he doesn't like what is happening in Zimbabwe. The present incumbent, Mbeki (try saying that without your teeth in) is totally useless, but not surprising I suppose seeing the history he has had with Mugabe. Mugabe is the classic melagomaniac, almost funny in a way had it not been for the suffering hi is inflicting on the people of the country. If they discover oil under the bush, the Americans will find their conscience quicker than Hillary paying off her election campaign debts. But that is not to be, according to the news. She owes a colossal amount of money spent on an unsuccessful dream.
Good to go on holiday with my relationship with E on an even plane. She is happy with her tests, something about a job at an Italian cultural mission. Good luck to her, even though it won't sort out the finances. I have said it before and I say it again, I admire people who put their wishes and daily cultural happiness top of the list and money lower down. The trouble is of course, that this is an impossible situation to be in. In order to achieve number one, number two has to be more or less in place first. It's all about pragmatism and idealism, these are natural opposites. Quality of life is dependent on food in the larder, paper on the toilet roll and bills paid on time. Otherwise life contains no quality, it is simply a struggle to make ends meet. E knows this, but then we get to the bit I don't understand...
Well, bags are packed, the car is filled and clean, Kevin seems happy and everything in the garden is lovely, as they say. So have a good summer everybody, and don't waste your time...enjoy it!
